Full code ownership at handoff

By · Updated

Short answer

PunkSolid hands every client full access to the finished codebase. You can maintain the site or app yourself in Cursor, hire any developer, or move on without lock-in. Handoff includes the repository and practical notes; optional 1:1 Cursor coaching is customized when you want help after delivery—not a proprietary platform fee to edit your own work.

Code ownership is PunkSolid’s default outcome, not an upsell. Approved company facts are simple: clients get full access to the finished code. They can maintain it themselves in Cursor or hand it to any other developer. Nothing in that sentence depends on staying on a PunkSolid retainer.

This page is the differentiator spelled out for procurement, legal, and engineering leads who have been burned by “you can edit only through our portal” agencies.

What you receive at handoff

Handoff means more than a zip file emailed once. On a typical engagement you should expect:

On website migration programs, handoff also includes artifacts from launch discipline: signed URL inventories, redirect maps, metadata parity checklists, and tracking notes for tools you already relied on—CallTrackingMetrics, Google Tag Manager, GA4, consent platforms, and HIPAA-aware forms when those were in scope on healthcare work.

Ownership is the same whether the deliverable is a marketing site, web app, plugin, or custom integration. See website development, web app development, and custom software development for delivery shapes; ownership does not change between them.

Editing in Cursor after handoff

Most PunkSolid repositories are meant to be edited in Cursor with the same habits we used during delivery: specs for risky changes, human review on claims and compliance copy, and automated checks before merge. The methodology page describes agent and human gates on our projects; your handoff repo should make those gates legible in rules files and CI.

Editors who never used git before can still learn targeted workflows. Optional Cursor coaching is customized to whatever each client needs—we do not publish fixed session bundles on that page. Example goals we may discuss after handoff include learning to update your own site when structured content fields replaced WordPress ACF, or running an import job that replaced WP All Import inside the codebase.

The cursor rules guide and agents.md guide explain patterns we often embed so agents do not bypass review.

Handing the repository to another developer

You may hire in-house engineers, bring in another agency, or split maintenance by specialty. Because you own the repository:

We document integration points honestly: which webhooks, CRM endpoints, and tag containers must stay stable after a migration. The healthcare WordPress rebuilds case study describes eight large provider sites where each client could maintain in Cursor or hand off elsewhere—no lock-in language in the contract story, only facts we are allowed to publish.

When a new developer onboards, give them the handoff README, redirect map if URLs changed, and the methodology-aligned check list your repo already encodes.

If you stop working with PunkSolid

Stopping work with us does not revoke your codebase. You retain:

We do not keep silent super-admin access on your production systems unless you explicitly scope retained access in writing for support. Optional future coaching or builds require a new agreement like any other vendor.

That independence is why ownership belongs in the Own and train pillar on services next to coaching: the code is yours first; coaching is optional help using it.

Ownership on migrations versus greenfield builds

Greenfield website development still ends in a repository you control. Migrations add obligations: redirects must stay mapped, tracking must stay faithful, and editors must understand import tooling. On approved healthcare work, sites with 1,000–6,000 pages moved off WordPress, Elementor, ACF, and WP All Import into Cursor-built code with in-repo replacements for structured fields and bulk imports—each client owned the result.

Performance improvements on those projects are reported as PageSpeed scores (lab 0–100 ranges), separate from Core Web Vitals pass or fail in Search Console. Ownership includes the performance budget your team inherits: you can keep tuning assets without asking us for permission.

What we do not promise

We do not quote prices or guaranteed timelines on this page. We do not claim you will never need outside help—large repos benefit from skilled maintainers. We do not invent client counts, testimonials, or proprietary “platform” tiers.

PunkSolid is not affiliated with Cursor or Anthropic; we use those names to describe tools clients may use after handoff.

What you keep versus what stays optional

You keep: source, deploy path, documentation, redirect and tracking artifacts from migrations, and the right to change vendors. Optional: further PunkSolid engineering, retained support agreements, or coaching sessions—each scoped after discovery, never required to edit your own site.

That split is the commercial point of code ownership: PunkSolid sells delivery and expertise, not perpetual rent on your property.

How it works

  1. Delivery in your git repository

Finished work lives in a repository your organization controls—not a hosted-only CMS we gate. History, branches, and deploy hooks are yours before we consider the engagement complete.

  2. Handoff documentation

We include environment notes, deploy steps, Cursor rules or agent guidance, and README context so the next person is not blocked on tribal knowledge. Migrations add redirect and tracking parity notes from signed inventories.

  3. Your team edits in Cursor

Content and code changes happen locally or in your CI with the same review gates we used during delivery. Optional coaching covers safe edits when you want guided practice.

  4. Freedom to switch partners

You may hand the repo to another agency, hire in-house engineers, or stop working with PunkSolid. We do not retain silent admin access unless you scope retained support in writing.

FAQ

Do we really get the full source code?

Yes. PunkSolid builds websites, web apps, custom software, and plugins with AI-assisted development, and clients get full access to the finished code. You can maintain it yourself in Cursor or hand it to any other developer. There is no lock-in to a proprietary CMS.

What if we are not technical?

You still receive the repository and documentation. Optional 1:1 Cursor coaching is customized to what each client needs—for example, learning to update your own site after handoff. Coaching does not replace ownership; it helps you use what you already have.

What happens if we stop working with PunkSolid?

You keep the codebase, deploy credentials you control, and documentation from handoff. We do not hold the site hostage on a hidden platform. Future work with us—or anyone else—is your choice.

How do we start a project with ownership in mind?

Use the [contact](/contact/) form with your stack and goals. Ownership is the default outcome on every service page, not an add-on.

Cursor is a trademark of Anysphere, Inc. Claude Code is a product of Anthropic. PunkSolid is not affiliated with either company.
