AI agents explained
Agents as loops of observe, act, and verify—plus where they fail without engineering discipline.
GuideWebsites, apps, and software built with AI—you own the code.
Short answer
Agentic AI is a language model plus orchestration that plans steps, calls tools such as shells and APIs, observes results, and revises work in a loop. It is not a single chat reply. In production engineering, agentic AI is a draft engine behind specs, tests, and human approval—not an autonomously shipping developer.
Agentic AI describes systems where a language model decides what to do next, invokes tools (terminal, editor, HTTP, databases through narrow servers), and iterates until a stop condition—tests green, human approval, or a step budget. The phrase is broader than any one product. PunkSolid uses it in the engineering sense: loops that can change your repository when policy allows—not brochure chat or hosted “build my site” products (those live on sibling network sites).
| Dimension | Typical chat assistant | Agentic engineering workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Turns | One question, one answer | Many steps with tool results in between |
| Context | Whatever you paste | Repo index, rules, AGENTS.md, MCP servers |
| Side effects | Usually none | May edit files or run commands |
| Accountability | User retypes and applies | Reviewers judge diffs against a spec |
Consumer chat is useful for explanations. Agentic AI in delivery assumes git, CI, and named verify commands.
Anthropic’s public framing for effective agents emphasizes clear tasks, tool access with limits, and checkpoints—not infinite autonomy. Cursor’s agent mode similarly pairs model planning with IDE tooling and user-visible diffs. The pattern is stable across vendors even when UIs differ.
A minimal engineering loop:
Step five is where PunkSolid invests. See spec-driven development.
Agentic coding is agentic AI applied to software maintenance: refactors, tests, content pages, migration scripts. Tools differ by interface—terminal-first Claude Code vs IDE-first Cursor—but the production risks are the same: scope creep, hallucinated APIs, and silent edits to redirects or secrets.
We compare workflows in Claude Code vs Cursor and category-level tradeoffs in AI coding agents compared. We do not crown universal winners from synthetic scores.
Models optimize for locally coherent patches. They do not automatically respect canonical URL maps, trademark lists, or “do not create” domain policies. Agentic AI without governance produces fast garbage.
PunkSolid guardrails:
That matches our methodology for client work and our own apps/ai-network content gate (word minimums, FAQs, sources before reviewed).
Agentic clients increasingly wire tools through Model Context Protocol servers instead of one-off plugins. MCP does not make models safer by itself; it makes integrations auditable and swappable. Read What is MCP? before granting write access to production data.
Keep shell and MCP privileges narrow. An agent that can grep beats an agent that can drop tables.
Clients hire PunkSolid for custom software development and migrations, not for tool hype. We disclose when agentic drafting accelerates delivery; clients retain repository ownership—code ownership.
MSAs should state whether subcontractors may use client org credentials on Cursor or Anthropic accounts, and whether transcripts may be retained. Agentic AI does not reduce IP or compliance obligations.
AI code review often finds the same patterns in vibe-coded repos regardless of vendor. Prevention is a spec plus branch protection.
PunkSolid.ai owns engineering explainers for agentic AI and coding agents. Consumer agentic website builders and design tools are different intents—hosted publishing, not your git repo. We link between sites where useful; we do not duplicate their primary keywords.

If leadership asks whether agentic AI can ship a multi-tenant static network with SEO discipline, the PunkSolid network build case study describes how this repo enforces quality while agents draft pages. For your domain, start at website development or contact.
Healthy programs track revert rate, time-to-green CI, and reviewer minutes per merge—not leaderboard scores from third-party “coding agent” shootouts. A team that ships fewer lines but fewer rollbacks is winning even if a vendor demo looked flashier.
When leadership asks for ROI, compare baseline delivery (spec write, implement, review) to agent-assisted delivery on the same acceptance tests. If acceptance is vague, numbers lie. Tie pilots to one product vertical—a checkout tweak, a migration slice, a docs section—not a vague “use AI everywhere” mandate.
Confirm data retention on chat and tool logs, whether client code trains vendor models by default, regional data residency, and how enterprise SSO maps to seat licensing. Agentic features often sit on higher tiers; pricing pages change—re-read terms at contract time.
If subcontractors use your org’s Cursor or Anthropic seats, your DPA should cover their agent sessions the same as human IDE access. Agentic AI does not create a loophole for PHI or secrets in prompts.
Marketing cycles will rename agentic products every quarter. The loop—observe, act, verify—persists. Invest in specs and CI, not in memorizing feature matrices. When a vendor ships a new tool mode, reconcile it against AGENTS.md and run the same acceptance commands before you celebrate velocity.
In marketing, the terms blur. On PunkSolid, “agent” is the software loop; “agentic AI” stresses tool use and iteration. See [AI agents explained](/guides/ai-agents-explained/) for the loop diagram.
Not on production systems with compliance and ownership requirements. It accelerates drafting when specs and tests exist. Delivery still flows through [methodology](/methodology/) review.
Often yes—when the product plans, invokes tools, and continues after results. A one-shot answer without tools is usually not agentic in the engineering sense.
MCP standardizes how clients connect to tools and data. It is wiring, not a replacement for governance. Read [What is MCP?](/guides/what-is-mcp/).
Cursor is a trademark of Anysphere, Inc. Claude Code is a product of Anthropic. PunkSolid is not affiliated with either company.
